Why I do Aikido?

Short Answer:

Kodawari - The physical mental challenge!

The Long Answer:

My martial arts life started at age 16 when I was failing A levels and being threatened to be thrown out of school. A teacher at the school started a Karate class and out of a dare, a group of us joined just to see how long it would take before we all dropped out.

Training regularly, built the self-confidence and mental discipline that transferred to my academics. I very successfully got the grades I needed to attend City University, London to study Optometry.

It was there that I started Aikido, after impressively seeing my first instructor Phil Newcombe launching someone half-way across the room, after of all things, a karate punch!

Since then, I have developed a successful career and Optometric Practice working as an Optometrist; I have specialities in Paediatrics, Contact Lens work and Sports Vision. Regular training allows me to have the release from my professional life, whilst still being mentally and physically stimulated.

Why I continue? ... I guess that it is with the hope that I can introduce other people to “Budo” so that it will positively impact on their lives as much as it has mine.
